If you plan to learn Japanese, then you should first know what’s the best way to learn kanji. Japanese consists of three distinct types of writing systems: hiragana, kanji and katakana. This is what makes it very difficult for a native English speaker to learn Japanese. English language has only 26 characters to learn. But in Japanese the hiragana, the simplest of the three writing systems comprises of approximately 45 characters; kanji comprises of 2000 to 3000 characters; and katakana also has several characters!
The three writing systems mentioned above are both independent and interdependent for their comprehension. This means that you can write hiragana and make sense, without using kanji. But there are places when the hiragana has to be used with kanji in order to explain the meaning. When you start learning kanji, make sure that you are very thorough with hiragana.
